5th Session
8th June 2012
2 Hours
Today's session was a short one, under two hours. All that was left to do was the two small chrysanthemums, the two leaves and the yellow highlights on the koi. I decided I would have the two remaining chrysanthemums the same colour so I didn't have too many different colours in the piece. We went for a really nice light blue colour for the flowers. The blue is actually 3 different shades blended together and looks great.
As usual, the area around the head of the koi was pretty painful, but there wasn't much to do there as it was just the yellow highlights left to do. The colour seemed to be going in really easily and quickly and the whole session went very fast.
And that was that, before I knew it it was all finished. I got up to look at the finished piece in the mirror and I thought it looked great. I'm really happy with the end result. It really works with the contours of my arm and I love it! It's been worth all the pain, scabby and flaky skin, bleeding and rubbing in of cream to end up with a really beautiful Japanese piece by a really great artist.
I'll get some final photo's taken soon to properly show off the tattoo once it's all fully healed. I'm going to get my other arm tattooed by Diego starting at the end of July so I'll continue this blog and document the progress of that.

So today was the day to finally get some colour in. This felt sort of strange as I'm so used to seeing just black, so I was nervously excited to see the results. I knew I wanted red for this flower but Diego also suggested using a second colour on the inside of the petals so I thought why not!
One thing I've learnt over these few months of getting tattooed, is to let go and trust Diego and know that he'll do it really nicely, rather than try to dictate how I think it should be done. Before starting to get tattooed I had spent so long looking at reference images and trying to piece together the perfect tattoo like a jigsaw, that I imagined choosing every little detail of the tattoo myself. So it was really nice to get things rolling with an artist and build confidence and trust with that person, and just let that person develop things naturally in their own style.
He also finished most of the koi. Hopefully there will be some yellow highlights going on the koi, but we'll wait until all the flowers are coloured and see if it needs it. So far I'm really happy with the results. Hopefully we should be able to get this finished in the next session.
Anyway, just a couple of quick snap shot of the results are above. Better pics, as always, will follow.

3rd Session
3rd April 2012
4 Hours
It's been 2 months since my last session so I was really looking forward to this one. I thought we were going to do another 3 hour session like last time and had mentally prepared for that, but I was wrong! We ended up doing 4 hours (with a few breaks thrown in).
After a quick hello Diego dived straight in to the inside of my arm, working on the remaining wind bars and waves until the background was complete. This was good as the first part of the session is always the easiest to deal with, so getting the inside arm done and out of the way while I was still in good spirits was a good idea! The first two hours flew by as we were chatting about different tattoo artists and he was telling me about being tattooed by Horiyoshi III which was cool. (These are my favourite parts of the sessions. The parts where I get to hear Diego talk about his experiences in tattooing and his views on things). The last part of the background was on my chest and on top of my shoulder. These parts were really nasty so I was glad when they were over! The last part of the session was on the koi. The scales were done with a smaller needle and on an easier part of the arm so they weren't too bad. The head however hurt like a bitch! I'm glad I didn't quit before we got to the koi as it's all starting to really come together now. Can't wait to get some colour in there!
I'll put some better pictures up when the bruising's gone down and I'm healed.

2nd Session
3rd February 2012
3 Hours
I arrived at the studio for my second session to find Horimomo was over from Japan to do a guest spot at MVL. He was a really nice guy who produces some amazingly bold and striking tattoos (check out some of his work here). Horimomo tattoos by Tebori (tattooing by hand) which is a traditional technique in japanese tattooing. Here's a quick iphone pic of him tattooing a tiger onto his client.
It was really interesting to see him tattooing in this traditional style, although I have to say it looked really painful, especially as it was on the chest!
Anyway, onto my tattoo! Diego started work on the background shading, beginning with the forearm and working up to the shoulder. In terms of pain, the forearm was fine. The bicep was pretty sore, but the area at the top of the shoulder that spills over onto the chest was definitely the worst. The bit that goes over the collar bone was deeply unpleasant as it made the entire collar bone vibrate. There was also an area at the top of my chest next to my shoulder that was pretty nasty as the needle seemed to be hitting a nerve as the pain was shooting from right where the needle was, in a line all the way up my neck!
Aside from the pain, the session was actually very enjoyable. It was great hearing Diego and Horimomo chatting and telling funny stories. Also it's always nice to chat to Diego about tattooing in general as he's got a really nice outlook on things.
Really happy with how it's coming along, but I can't wait to get the next session done now and finnish off the rest of the background. It will have to be about eight weeks between sessions as Diego's wife is giving birth soon and obviously he wants some time off so my next session is start of April.

1st Session
6th January 2012
4 Hours
Ok, so I thought I'd start a blog to keep a record of my tattoo progress. I've been thinking about a tattoo for about 2 years now, constantly researching online, looking at books and talking to as many people as possible. I knew I wanted the Japanese style for my tattoo as it has a certain class and beauty that no other style has for me. I finally ended up taking the plunge with Diego Azaldegui at MVL Tattoo in Leeds, UK (www.mvltattoos.com) and booking in for a three quarter Japanese sleeve.
I went to visi Diego in December 2011 to talk to him about what I wanted and check out the studio. Diego produces some really great Japanese work and is also a really nice guy, so it was an easy decision to let him work on my very first tattoo.
My first booking was for 6th Jan. This was a 4 hour session, the first 2 hours was spent with Diego drawing directly onto my arm with pens and refining the design until he was happy. The remaining time was spent doing the outlines.
I don't mind admitting that I was shitting myself before he started tattooing me! This was my first tattoo ever and it's a pretty big one too. The session went really well though and I was very happy with the end result.
